Longing for the Imperishable (Anhelo por lo Imperecedero)

Do you ever have one of those days...

...when you feel a restlessness in your spirit, a longing for something you know is real but can't quite touch?

...when you know God is with you, but you long to finally be with Him?

...when you can't help crying, not because your life now is bad, but because you're so hungry for the life that's waiting for you?

...when you wish you could step from this world of change and perishable things into the world where life never ends and all things are imperishable?

If you haven't felt this way, then these questions probably sound silly. If you have had days like this, you know what I'm talking about.

It's hard to explain. It's not that I don't want to enjoy and complete my life here. I do. But sometimes there sweeps over me a longing so powerful that it brings me to tears. It reminds me that my life here on earth is only a shadow of the reality.

The real life I was created for is a life of perfection, beauty, and glory - face to face with the One who created me!

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” -Revelation 21:3-4

So when I hear the music of heaven calling, I let the tears flow.
I embrace the longing God has placed within me.
And I rejoice that this life is not all there is. One day I will be clothed with the imperishable and begin the real life I was created for!

For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. -1 Corinthians 15:53

-1 Corintios 15:53 15:53

The Process (El Proceso)

Almost three years ago I started writing what I thought would be a little devotional book based on the book of Job.

It took about a month to finish the rough draft. Then I started revising it...and almost three years later I'm still working on it.

I've lost count of how many drafts this book has been through:
-At first I realized it was too short, so I went back and lengthened each chapter.
-Then I felt like it wasn't personal enough, so I added more of my own experiences and stories.
-Then I sent it to some friends who gave me really good feedback, and I made more changes.
-Then I felt led to develop some of the tougher theological truths (that took a while).
-Then my mom suggested that I add a Discussion Guide for it, so I started writing that.
-Then I sent it to more friends, who provided more feedback, and I made more changes.
-Then my mom and I went over the chapters with a fine tooth comb and made more changes (I'm so thankful for her editing expertise!).
-And right now I'm still tweaking it here and there, polishing, and making changes in some places (I still need to finish the Discussion Guide also).

I never expected it to take this long or be this hard to write 'a little devotional book'. But considering the topic of Job, I probably should have known it wouldn't be an easy process.

Yet looking back, I can see how valuable the process has been. God has taught me things along the way that I needed to know in order to write the book HE had planned.

When I started, I had no idea what the journey would be like, and I had a different end result pictured. But as always, God's ways are not my ways--they are much BETTER.

I'm hoping and praying to have this book finished before Christmas. (I appreciate your prayers for that as well!) But however long it takes to complete, I'm learning to trust God with the process.

And I'm learning that when we follow Jesus, we can expect to experience the unexpected.
We can expect a more difficult process than we planned on.
And we can expect to be amazed at the end result, which is far better than anything we imagined!

I think Job would agree.

Then Job replied to the Lord:
"I know that you can do all things;

no plan of yours can be thwarted."
-Job 42:1-2

Question: How do you feel about 'the process' you're in today?

Luego, empecé a revisarlo…

Promise-Keeper (Cumplidor De Promesas)

Every rainbow is a spectacular reminder that God is a promise-keeper.

I took this photo last week while we were driving. My mom and I gasped in wonder at the most beautiful rainbow I've probably ever seen! We could see the full rainbow (except for the very top which was hidden by clouds). And there was a double rainbow on one end. It was amazing!

And it got me thinking about God's faithfulness.

Joshua testified to the Israelites, "...You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed" (Joshua 23:14).

Many of God's promises to us He fulfills every day:

Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5b).

"And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
"being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).

Others promises from God we won’t see fulfilled for quite some time yet:

In my Father’s house are many rooms…I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:2-3).

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away’” (Revelation 21:3-4).

In my own life, I’ve seen many of God’s specific promises to me fulfilled. But there are others I’m still waiting on. Some days I wonder why God is taking so long to accomplish something that He promised me long ago.

But then I think of these words:

I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil” (Psalm 119:162).

The Psalmist didn't say he rejoiced in the fulfillment of the promise, but in the promise itself.

The rainbow reminds us that God keeps His promises. The promise itself reminds us who our God is - loving, gracious, kind, thoughtful, and involved in our lives.

Isn't it amazing that God chooses to make promises to us? He doesn't have to, He's God after all. But He does. And that is why we rejoice!

The awesome God of the universe bends down and lovingly, graciously, gives mere humans His great and precious promises (2 Peter 1:4). How astounding!

And yes, He will keep them. In His own perfect timing and plan, every promise will be fulfilled, not one will fail. Because our God is a Promise-Keeper.

Question: What promise are you rejoicing in today?

Cumplidor De Promesas

Change (Cambio)

You've probably heard it said that the only constant in life is change.

You can see change all around, especially this time of year. The weather is changing. The leaves are changing. The kids are changing.

Sometimes change is necessary, even a good thing. In many ways change is a gift. I'm thankful for the ability to change, so I'm not forever stuck in the same habits, thoughts, or circumstances.

Right now a lot is changing in my life. My health is improving - something I've prayed for years that God would change. And it's happening! But even welcome change can still be difficult, confusing or stressful.

As I try to navigate my way through all the changes happening in my life right now, I'm so very thankful that one thing will never change - my GOD!

Jesus is the same "yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).

As I journey through this life of constant change, my God remains the same. And best of all, He is WITH ME always.

"...surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20b).

Cambio

Look Up (Mirar Hacia Arriba)

I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let my foot slip—

He who watches over me will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over me

will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over me—

the Lord is my shade at my right hand;
the sun will not harm me by day,

nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep me from all harm—

He will watch over my life;
the Lord will watch over my coming and going

both now and forevermore.
-Psalm 121 (personalized)

Each vantage point in life has its blessings.

From the mountain-top we can look down and see more clearly the path we have traveled and how God worked it all for good.

But it is in the valley that we can look up to the hills, rising above us in majesty, and hear our Maker beckoning us to continue the journey with Him.

Lord, help us not to miss the view you have set before us, no matter where we are today on the journey. Amen.

Mirar Hacia Arriba

Alzaré mis ojos a los montes-
¿de dónde vendrá mi socorro?
Mi socorro viene de Jehová,
Que hizo los cielos y la tierra.
No dará mi pie al resbaladero-
Ni se dormirá el que me guarda;
He aquí, no se adormecerá ni dormirá
El que me guarda.
Jehová es mi guardador-
Jehová es mi sombra a mi mano derecha;
El sol no me fatigará de día,
Ni la luna de noche.
Jehová me guardará de todo mal-
Él guardará mi alma.
Jehová guardará mi salida y mi entrada
Desde ahora y para siempre.
-Salmo 121 (personalizado)

Tongue That Heals (Lengua Que Sana)

I bit my tongue last week. And it hurt.

It hurt when I ate. It hurt when I drank. It hurt when I brushed my teeth.

For the next 48 hours I was very aware of my tongue and everything I did with it. It's strange how such a tiny part of the body can suddenly feel very important and necessary!

Thankfully, it did heal and I went back to "normal" life again.

But it made me think. God created my tongue with the ability to heal...not just to heal itself when I accidentally bite it, but also to heal others.

"The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit." -Proverbs 15:4

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." -Proverbs 12:18

I confess that too often my tongue is not an instrument of healing. But I do desire for it to be one. I want the words I speak to be wise, life-giving, and healing to others.

Lord, please keep making this change in me. Make me more aware of my tongue. Use it as an instrument in your hands to bring healing to others. Amen.

Lengua Que Sana
