Choose Truth (Escoge la Verdad)

Last week I came across something I wrote years ago that still still applies to me today. I'm blessed to know so much truth. But simply hearing or knowing it isn't enough. I must choose to believe what is true and reject the lies Satan throws at me. Jesus Himself is the Truth (John 14:6). As I love Him and choose Him, I choose Truth.

I hope this reflection from years ago encourages you today as it did me. =)

What Do You Want To Believe?

I did something really stupid this week. I got one of those e-mails that told me I had won a $250 gift card to Old Navy. I only had to confirm it by clicking on a link, then they would mail it to me. My first reaction was, “yeah right,” and I almost deleted the e-mail. But then I thought, well, maybe it’s really true...maybe I should just check it out...you never know.... So I clicked on the link in the e-mail. About 30 minutes and much frustration later, I finally exited from all the websites I had gotten into and promptly put that e-mail in the “Junk” folder.

Then I asked myself, why did I do that? After all the false e-mails I’ve gotten before, after other experiences of learning those things never are true, why did I give in this time and put myself through the frustration and disappointment once again?

Well, I know God is gracious because even though I allowed myself to waste time pursuing that silly e-mail, He used it to give me an object lesson.

I wanted to believe that it was true. I wanted that $250 gift card. So even though I knew that it couldn’t possibly be true, I chose to believe for a little while that if I took their “online survey” and filled out all their forms, and read all their advertisements...that eventually I’d get to the final screen where they would actually send me the gift card. Of course, it didn’t turn out that way. I just wasted my time and got frustrated before I finally wised up and left it behind.

Don’t we do the same thing in life? We know the Truth -Jesus, and we have God’s Word. Yet too often, some lie comes into our life and instead of immediately identifying it as “junk” and deleting it, we start thinking about it. Before long we decide to believe that it just might be true. And pretty soon we’re following that false belief down a path that only ends in frustration and disappointment.

Some lies that come our way are easy to recognize as “junk,” while others are either more subtle or more tempting. Just because we know the Truth, doesn’t mean we always choose to believe the Truth. Sometimes we choose to believe what we want to believe. But basing my beliefs on what I feel or want in the moment is both wrong and scary. It may not be a very big deal with an e-mail advertisement, but in other areas of life it can be a serious mistake.

So as I thought about my little object lesson this week, I realized I’m very thankful for two things:
1) God’s Word, which always acts as the filter to expose the lies that try to entangle me
2) the godly people in my life who help me identify the lies or “junk” so I can quickly “delete” them and get back on the path of Truth.

I hope you are encouraged by these thoughts. I pray that whatever lies arrive in your “mailbox” in the coming days, you will quickly identify them and send them to the “junk” folder! And I pray our hearts will grow in loving what is true.

Pressing on in Truth,
-Joanna

- Joanna

He Lives And He's Coming Back Again! (¡Él vive y regresará!)

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
-John 14:1-3

They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven."
-Acts 1:10-11

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
-1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

"Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End...Yes I am coming soon."
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.
-Revelation 22:12-13, 20-21

-Apocalipsis 22:12-13, 20-21

The Wonderful Story (La Historia Maravillosa)

I hope you had a joyful Easter celebration this past weekend. We have such a magnificent Savior! He not only died in our place but now He lives, and He lives in us! Hallelujah!

I know you rejoice with me in how amazing and wonderful the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection is. But at the same time, I know it can be challenging to share this wonderful story with others.

I came across this short story that I wrote several years ago, and I thought it was fitting for this week's post. May God continue to strengthen and inspire us to share His story with others.

Blessings,
-Joanna

The Reluctant Messenger

“I don’t know how they do it,” I muttered to myself as I put my bag in the overhead bin and plopped down in seat 21B. I was still thinking about this morning’s Easter sermon.

“I’m not an evangelist, just a college student.”

An elderly gentleman squeezed past me into 21A. I closed my mouth and redirected my thoughts as a prayer. Lord, you know I’m just a small town girl. It’s fine for the preacher to say “Open your mouth and share the gospel” – I mean he gets paid to do that. But what if I try and mess it up?

I glanced at the man beside me. He plugged in his headphones, pulled down the window shade, and closed his eyes. No conversation there.

Time to refocus. I pulled out my pocket Bible and found Psalm 27, my favorite.

“Man, I hate flying.” A backpack hit the floor by my feet. A teenage boy dropped into 21C. Sandy hair, brown eyes, probably 16 or 17 years old.

“Hey, I’m Nick.” He nodded at me.

“Katrina.” I nodded back.

“What are you reading? Is that a Bible?” He actually sounded interested. “My cousin’s always talking to me about God. Are you one of those ‘born-again’ people?”

“Yes….” Lord, you’re kidding, right?

“I believe in God, but somehow it feels like something’s missing. You know?”

“Yeah….” Ok, God, I can take a hint.

“Do you think I’ll go to heaven?” His brown eyes locked on mine.

“Well…” I give in, Lord. I’m opening my mouth now. Please make something good come out! “I can tell you how you can know for sure.”

I smiled at him. Yes, I can.

“Bueno…” Me rindo, Señor. Voy a abrir mi boca ahora. Por favor ¡haz que algo bueno salga! “Puedo decirte cómo puedes saber con seguridad.”

Le sonreí. Sí, puedo.

The Story Behind The Cover (La Historia Detrás de la Cubierta)

Growing up I often heard the saying, "You can't judge a book by its cover." I think with books this is sometimes true, sometimes not. I could list several books which I could tell by the cover would not be worth reading. But other books were nothing like I expected from the cover.

I think with people, this saying is also true. We shouldn't judge someone by their outward appearance. However, I think there's more to it than that. I think we should remember that whatever "cover" a person has, there is always a story behind it.

For instance,
- the sweet old lady who always smiles at you at church...may have been a pioneer missionary who gave birth to triplets in the jungle, then painfully watched as one by one they went to be with Jesus.

- the coworker who does his job faithfully and cheerfully...may have been held hostage by communist guerrillas in a foreign country.

- the neighbor lady who always smiles and nods as she passes your house walking her dog...may have survived two abusive marriages and still lives with the painful repercussions.

- the young man with the long hair and faded clothes, riding his bike down the street as you drive past...may be temporarily homeless because of mold illness and chemical sensitivity, just trying to survive day to day.

Believe it or not, these examples are based on true stories of people I know. But if I only looked at their outside and walked on by, I'd never know the stories they carried.

I know what it's like to feel overlooked and dismissed because of my appearance. And I know I'm not the only one. Recently God has been opening my eyes to see that each person has a story, no matter what "cover" they show on the outside.

What if we took the time to stop once in a while and ask someone for their story?

We might hear a great testimony of the faithfulness of God and be richly blessed.
We might hear a heartbreaking tale of suffering and be a blessing simply by listening.
We might make a new friend, discover things in common, or find a true kindred spirit.

Every person is valuable to God. Every one of us has a story. I believe we are blessed as we continually give and receive the stories God is writing in our lives.

I'm praying God will help me know when to stop and listen to the story behind the "cover." What about you?

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. -Philippians 2:4

–Fi. 2:4

Thank You! (¡Gracias!)

Life has been full of challenges lately. But God keeps reminding me of the important truths I need.

Yes, we often feel the painful effects of living in a fallen world.  Yes, we are in a spiritual battle. Yes, sin has consequences. Yes, sometimes life is just hard.

But...we are not alone. We have purpose in our pain. We have all we need in our gracious Savior. And we are on the winning side!

To all of you who have given prayers, encouragement, love and support to me and my family, THANK YOU! We couldn't walk this journey without you. And we hope we can be a blessing to you in your journey as well.

Here's a poem I wrote several years ago when I was in the midst of a fiery trial. It's still true today.

Thankful for you,
-Joanna

Hold My Arms

The sun beat down
glinting off armor and sharpened spears.
Two armies clashed.
High on a hill, Moses stood with arms upraised.
The Israelites were winning!
But Moses grew tired and lowered his arms.
The battle turned.
Only with his arms raised to heaven
could the fight be won.
“Hold my arms!” he cried, “Hold my arms!
The victory must be ours!”
Aaron and Hur jumped to his side.
They held his arms steady as the day grew long.
With the setting sun, the Israelites won.

In the dark of night
the battle rages, fierce yet unseen.
Good and evil clash,
contending for the souls of men.
On the earth below I stand with arms upraised
praying “Lord – help, deliver, save
those lost in sin, despair, and pain.”
But my spirit grows weary, my body is frail.
I cannot fight this battle alone.
“Hold my arms!” I cry, “Hold my arms!
The victory must be ours!”
You rush to my side and give strength to my prayers.
With arms raised to heaven we stand, though the day is long.
When the Son returns, we will see the victory!

(by Joanna K. Harris)

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. -1 Corinthians 15:57

¡Gracias!

Tú corres a mi lado y das fortaleza a mis oraciones.

-1Co. 15:57

Relax

Last week I listened to a sermon about having a relaxed heart. I think sometimes as Christians we feel like it's more "spiritual" to be concerned or worried about things. Having a relaxed attitude is often seen as immature or not caring about the serious issues of life.

However, Jesus is the one who said, Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me (John 14:1).

Having a relaxed heart is something the Holy Spirit works in us as we trust in Him. Taking time to focus on God and to let ourselves rest or relax in Him is something we do.

And believe it or not, science shows that a relaxed heart is a healthy heart.

So, how often do you relax?

How often do you practice a "put your feet up, lean your head back, close your eyes and breathe deeply" kind of relaxing?

Once a day? Once a week? Once a year?

I admit this isn't something I'm great at either. After years of being bed-ridden, I now love to do things just for the pure joy of DOING! And when I'm not active, my mind is usually jogging down three or four different trails simultaneously.

In our busy world it seems we're always on the go or at least our thoughts are always moving at a fast pace. I've discovered that ongoing activity and busy thoughts often cause my body to tense up. If I'm not careful I can spend a whole day in this "tense" mode without even realizing it.

I'm learning how helpful it is to take moments now and then throughout the day to just "relax."

Be still.
Calm the thoughts.
Smile.
Breathe.
Embrace this moment.
Rest in my Savior.

A heart at peace gives life to the body (Proverbs 14:30a).

I believe we need moments of stillness, of peace, of relaxation for the health of our bodies and our souls.

Will you join me this week in practicing relaxing moments and learning to cultivate a heart at rest in Jesus?

But I have stilled and quieted my soul (Psalm 131:2a).

En verdad que me he comportado y he acallado mi alma (Sal. 131: 2a).
