Singing In The Dark (Cantando en la oscuridad)

Slam! Thud. Click. Swish. Slam!

The stocks and locks fastened. The door banged shut. Dead air. Darkness.

Two new prisoners had been inducted into this pit of a jail. Put in the inner dungeon, the worst place possible. I almost felt sorry for them. Almost. Why should I pity anyone? I'd been here too long to care about anyone or anything. From the jailer's comments it sounded like they were some kind of religious fanatics. What did it matter? Whether they were here for stealing bread or for raising a religious ruckus. They wouldn't last long in that part of the jail.

I stretched my legs as far as my chains would allow and leaned my head against the rough wall. Another night of pain, of emptiness, of despair. I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the stench all around me, waiting for sleep to temporarily blot it all out.

I was jerked awake by pain in my toes, and quickly kicked my feet to dislodge the rat I knew was there. So much for sleep's shelter. Would this agony never end?

In the darkness I heard a sound. Not of rodents. Not of human agony. What could it be? I strained my ears. The sound slowly grew louder. I couldn't believe it! Someone was singing! Wait, I heard two voices. Coming from the inner dungeon. The two new prisoners were singing! I could only make out some of the words, but I'm sure they were singing to their God. The other prison sounds silenced. I couldn't hear a single moan or groan. Everyone was listening to this strange sound of voices filled with joy and peace. How was it possible?

If this was religious fanaticism, perhaps that's what I needed. I'd never heard anything so filled with hope and life. Listening to them I felt like someone had turned on a light in the darkness. Though I couldn't see a thing, somehow I sensed these men could see through the blackness.

Suddenly a roar pierced the singing! The earth shook violently! My chains fell off! The prison doors banged open! I rolled across the floor, gasping for breath.

Then just as suddenly, all was still. Every prison door stood open, but no one moved. We waited for the two men to speak. We all knew their God was powerful.

Then one of them called out, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"

There was a commotion outside, voices, lights. The jailer rushed in to the cell with the new prisoners. I saw his trembling hands as he led them out, and I heard him ask, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Every ear strained to hear their response.

"Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved."

Jesus.

A warmth filled me at the sound of his name. Jesus.

A Savior? A powerful God who shook the earth? A compassionate God who rescued his followers? And perhaps a God who cared about prisoners?

Jesus.

I whispered his name. "Jesus, I believe in you. I believe."

(based on the story in Acts 16, of Paul and Silas in prison)

I love this story! It moves me every time I read it. What a miracle it was for Paul and Silas to be singing praise to God in such a dark time and place. Together they encouraged each other and lifted their voices. And together they watched God turn a jail and a city right-side up to faith in Jesus.

No matter how dark it gets my friends, keep singing praise to God. Keep singing! You never know who might be listening. You never know what chains might be broken, what doors might be opened, and what lives might be transformed by our mighty God!

Cantando en la oscuridad

¡Golpe! ¡Rechinar de una puerta. Click. Silbido. ¡Golpe!

Los cepos y candados cerrados. La puerta se cerró de golpe. Aire muerto. Oscuridad.

¡No podía creerlo! ¡Alguien estaba cantando!

¡Sigan cantando!

The Greatest Dream (El Más Grande Sueño)

Dreams are precious things. I can't even imagine life without hopes and desires, imagination and possibilities, vision and dreams.

I've had many dreams in my life. Some have been fulfilled. Some are on hold. Some I've had to let go.

When I was a kid, one of my dreams was to be a missionary. God fulfilled that dream for two wonderful years after college. Even with some challenges, it was even better than I'd hoped! Then I had to lay down that dream as my life took an unexpected turn. But in His kindness, God has given me new dreams to pursue.

It's a beautiful thing when a dream is fulfilled and experienced.

Pause for a moment and consider with me...

What is your greatest dream?

Is it a place?
An achievement?
A person?

Of all the things your heart yearns for, which one sings the loudest?

I really had to think about it when I asked myself this question. What is my greatest dream?

I was a little surprised by the answer my heart sang back to me.

Being close to Jesus.

Above all the other grand visions, plans and desires, simply being close to Jesus is my greatest dream. To live each day aware of His sweet presence, resting in His love, listening to His voice, and loving Him more and more...that is my greatest dream.

Because no matter what happens in life, whether circumstances are wonderful or awful, Jesus never changes. He can still delight my heart in the toughest times. He still inspires awe. He still knows me like no one else and loves me beyond what I can fathom.

I know He is the one who has put this dream in my heart. And He is the one who works every day to fulfill it, so that regardless of circumstances, for me every day is "living the dream!"

What about you? Please share with us in the comments what is your greatest dream.

He tenido muchos sueños en mi vida.

Inspiration For A New Year (Inspiración para un Nuevo Año)

At the start of each new year, I like to have a word or a theme for the year. As I pray about it, God shows me what He wants me to focus on.

But I think there are also some simple words that are good for each of us to remember as we begin a new year.

So here are ten words to guide and inspire us in 2016.

Breathe.

Laugh.

Love.

Forgive.

Rest.

Receive.

Dream.

Persevere.

Worship.

Proclaim!

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion--to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of His splendor. -Isaiah 61:1-3

May this new year be filled with special blessings, unexpected opportunities, beautiful moments, healing, progress, freedom, love and great joy in Jesus! Glory to His name!

God bless you,
-Joanna

– Is. 61:1-3

¡Gloria a Su nombre!

Dios te bendiga,
-Joanna

Appreciate your prayers

I apologize that I haven't been blogging on my normal schedule. Some of you know that my family has been going through quite a crisis lately. My mom was very sick and now apparently there's mold somewhere in our house. So while our lives are in upheaval, I'll be taking a break from blogging. Hopefully I'll be back to it in January. In the meantime, we sure appreciate your prayers for physical healing, encouragement, and for our house to be restored to a healthy state. Thank you!

God is good all the time. He is faithful. He is our loving Father and Jesus is our victory! May you continue to see Him and worship Him this Christmas season.

God bless you.

Grateful For Now (Agradecida por el Ahora)

Every year in November I look back.

Back to 11 years ago when my health crashed and my life journey took an unexpected path. Every November marks another year on this strange journey. But every year I can see good things that God continues to bring out of the trials. Every year I see His faithfulness, His kindness, His grace.

Looking back I have much to be grateful for.

Every November I also look ahead.

Ahead to what I believe God will do in and through my life. Ahead to the fulfillment of promises God has given me. Ahead to new adventures and new joys. I know He will continue to do more than I can ask or imagine!

Looking ahead I can give thanks by faith for all God will do.

I think the hardest part sometimes is being grateful for now.

Right now, still facing struggles, living with daily challenges, praying for strength for today...right now, can I give thanks?

One day, today will be a memory, and I'll look back and see God's faithfulness and grace to me.

One day, I'll see how today was a stepping stone to my future, a necessary part of God's great plan for me.

But can I see that right now?

Sometimes I can. Sometimes I can't. Perhaps that's why being grateful for now is more challenging. It requires faith. To look at today, with all its tedious annoyances or painful struggles - and still give thanks.

Thanks that God is with me always, even today.
Thanks that God loves me always, even today.
Thanks that God's grace pours over me always, even today.
Thanks that Jesus is my source of joy always, even today.

Yes, there is much to be thankful for today. The choice is mine. The choice is yours.

Today, in this moment, I'm grateful for now.

Adelante a nuevas aventuras y nuevas alegrías.

A veces puedo.

What's In A Name? (¿Qué hay en un Nombre?)

A good name is more desirable than great riches (Proverbs 22:1a).

What is the most common name among the people you know?

Amongst my acquaintance, the most popular girl's name hands down is Jennifer, or some form of it (Jenni, Jenna, Jen, etc.). And the most common boy's name is by far David/Dave. Names like Katie and Kim for girls, and Josh and John for boys would be distant seconds. But I only know one Dacia and one Davor. =)

This is the kind of random stuff I think about when I'm brushing my teeth or sitting somewhere waiting for an appointment. What does it matter? Well, I think that regardless of how popular or unusual, each person's name is significant.

A name can remind us of who we are, or of who God is. Names can reflect family heritage or values. Our name is part of who we are.

Ever wonder why David is such a popular name? Perhaps one reason may be that it means "beloved." Can you imagine how significant that was to David in the Old Testament? His father thought little of him, his brothers disregarded and mistreated him, but David wrote dozens of Psalms that showed he clearly knew he was God's beloved.

In the Bible names have huge significance, and God frequently changed someone's name to reflect their new relationship with Him, such as Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (father of nations). Or when Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and later changed Saul to Paul. I think God wanted these men to be continually reminded of the work He had done and would do in their lives. Each mention of their new name was a fresh reminder.

Years ago I learned that my name means "God is gracious." And that truth has proven to be the theme of my life. So often when I hear someone say my name, it's like I hear God reminding me, "I am gracious to you."

Of course the most important name any of us can receive isn't the one we're given at birth. No matter what name our parents chose for us, our heavenly Father, through Jesus, has given us the best name of all, one that will last for eternity!

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! -1 John 3:1a

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. -Hebrews 12:22-23

P.S. If you're curious about the meaning of any name, there are different websites you can check. At times there's a little variation between meanings on different sites, but here are two sites that I've used before:

http://www.babynames.com/
http://www.meaning-of-names.com/

–He. 12:22-23a
