Not Knowing (Sin Saber)

My friend’s little girl said to me one day, “You know a lot.” I had to smile, because sometimes I feel like I do know a lot. If you get me started talking about writing or health or missions or hallmark movies, I can certainly share a wealth of knowledge (or at times an abundance of opinions). =)

The fact is that I actually do not know much – compared to all that there is to know. I’ve spent many years of my life wanting to know more things…things about health, ministry, leadership; things about circumstances, relationships, eternal mysteries, etc. It's wonderful to have a love for learning, and I hope I always do. However, at times I feel overwhelmed by all that I don’t know that I want to know.

After years of struggling, I’m finally learning something I wish I’d understood years ago. I’m learning that at times there is freedom in not knowing.

When Eve was tempted in the garden of Eden, Satan promised her she would be like God, “knowing good and evil.” I guess Eve wanted to know more too. But in that situation, she didn’t need to know more. In fact, it was not good for her to know more. She knew everything she needed to know in order to fulfill God’s purpose for her life.

I’m learning that sometimes God doesn’t want me to know more about a certain situation or question or mystery. Sometimes, I already know everything I need to know in order to enjoy Him and fulfill His purpose for my life. Sometimes, accepting that I don’t know, and it should be that way, actually takes a burden off my shoulders and leads to freedom.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, that’s ok. =) But I’m guessing there are some things in your life that you’ve been asking and asking God about…and He hasn’t given you any more knowledge about them for years. Perhaps you already know everything you need to know. Perhaps not knowing anything more is His gift to you.

Of course, I believe we can and should always seek to know more about God – about who He is and how He works in our lives. He is infinite, so there are infinite things to know about Him. And every new discovery about Him is another treasure that enriches our lives.

But in this finite world, in the circumstances of our lives, sometimes the hunger to know more is actually pulling us away from God instead of toward Him. And I think that’s a good way to recognize when to keep asking, and when to rest in not knowing.

Frankly, I’m very grateful for not knowing all the things that I was never supposed to know. It’s like never seeing a movie that everyone later tells you was a waste of time. There are a lot of movies I’m glad I never saw. =) And I’m thankful for God’s grace to me every time I’ve wasted time and energy trying to know things I didn’t need to know. I'm learning to trust Him with not knowing certain things, because of what I do know.

What I do know –

God is good.

God loves me.

God always has my best in mind.

The Holy Spirit is faithful to lead me into all truth.

God knows everything.
I don’t.

And for that, I’m glad.

What about you?

“Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.” -Isaiah 49:23c

Dios me ama.

Yo no.

For the New Year (Para el año Nuevo)

Every new year is filled with unknowns. Somehow this year feels like there are even more uncertainties in life than previous years...but one thing never changes. Our God is still who He says He is. He still does what He has promised to do. He will never fail us. And He calls us to continue walking with Him through it all.

Let's hold His hand, encourage each other, and keep walking by faith one day at a time.

Blessings to you for this new year,

-Joanna

Walk With Me

I knit you together in your mother’s womb,

I called your name – forever my beloved one.

I smile when you wake,

I laugh when you laugh.

I delight in you each day…

Will you walk with me?

Some days are sun-kissed and sweet,

Some days are cloudy and dull.

Sometimes the storms rage,

Sometimes the earth shakes.

Every day I am here, for you…

Through it all, will you walk with me?

For all your questions, I am the answer,

For all your needs, I will provide.

For all your wounds, I am your Healer,

For all your joys, I dance with you.

For all your moments, I am your strength…

Day by day, will you walk with me?

My unfailing love is your hope,

My powerful Word is your wisdom.

My abiding presence is your joy,

My supernatural joy is your strength.

My unending grace is your life…

Come, walk with me.

Día a día, ¿caminarás conmigo?

Mi amor inagotable es tu esperanza,

Mi Palabra poderosa es tu sabiduría.

Mi presencia permanente es tu gozo,

Mi alegría sobrenatural es tu fuerza.

Mi gracia infinita es tu vida...

Ven, camina conmigo.

Good News (Buenas Nuevas)

The other day my cell phone beeped that I had a text message, and my first thought was, “Oh no, I wonder what the bad news is….”

Then I stopped and thought about how sad it was that my first expectation was that there would be more bad news. When I finally got the courage to look at the text message, it was actually good news! And I clearly needed some good news that day.

Have you felt like that as well? It sure has been a crazy, difficult year. Maybe you’ve heard so much bad news this year that you’ve started expecting it.

As I was reading in Luke this week, verse 10 really hit me:

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”

I imagine that the Jews of that time lived expecting bad news. They were under Roman oppression. They didn’t have the rights and security that we take for granted today. I wonder if any of them lived expecting good news….

I love that God’s first message to the shepherds was “Do not be afraid.” I know I need to hear that message right now too.

Don’t be afraid of the unknowns.

Don’t be afraid of the needs.

Don’t be afraid of the challenges.

Don’t be afraid of the enemy.

Don’t be afraid of bad news.

“Surely the righteous will never be shaken…They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” –Psalm 112:6-7

Next the angel said, “I bring you good news” – GOOD NEWS! How long had it been since the Jews had heard good news? How hungry do you think their souls were for good news?

“Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.” –Proverbs 25:25

What was the good news the angel brought?

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” –Luke 2:11

As I read these familiar verses with fresh eyes, I realized that because of that first Christmas, you and I have the blessing of living with good news every day of our lives. Jesus is our good news!

Every day Jesus is with us – Emmanuel.

Every day Jesus is taking care of us – Shepherd.

Every day Jesus is interceding for us – High Priest.

Every day Jesus is singing over us – Creator.

Every day Jesus is loving us – Savior.

I can’t think of any news better than that!

This Christmas, I pray we’ll remind ourselves and each other of the good news of Jesus, our Savior.

“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth, peace to those on whom his favor rests.’” –Luke 2:13-14

Glory, peace, and favor to you this Christmas dear friends.

Buenas Nuevas

-Lucas 2:13-14

To Me Or For Me? (¿Para mi o A mi?)

I’ve recently heard various famous people say that having a different mindset is vital for success, especially in this crazy year. They say it’s important to think that what happens in your life is happening “for” you, not happening “to” you.

We’ve all experienced difficult things this year. In many ways it feels like circumstances have dictated decisions and experiences for us.

For instance…
I was thinking about growing my hair long again…corona decided this was the year for it.
I was hoping to find a part-time job in TX…corona decided that wasn’t a possibility.
I was praying about a mission trip to Israel…corona decided that wasn’t happening in the near future.

So I now have longer hair, no part-time job, and no international travel plans. I could feel angry and blame corona…or I could remember God’s view of my life.

“…all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” –Psalm 139:16

“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will….” –Ephesians 1:11

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” –Romans 8:28

Our God is not only still in control of His world, He is still working out every crazy situation and difficult circumstance for the good of those who love Him.

Somehow…He is. And someday we’ll see it clearly. Until then, even when it feels like things are happening “to” you, you can know that God is working out good things “for” you.

Even with shaggy hair, no steady job, and inability to travel…I know that Jesus is always “for” me – no matter what!

And He is for you too!

May that be the message we embrace, remind ourselves of, and encourage others with this year and every year until we see Him face to face.

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” –Romans 31-32

-Ro. 8:31-32

Kings And Pawns (Reyes y Peones)

This week I was explaining to my friend’s daughter about the different pieces used in Chess – Knights, Castles, Bishops, Pawns, King and Queen. Most of us learn as kids that in the game of Chess there is a vast difference between a pawn and a king. I think now is a good time for us to re-learn this truth.

These are difficult days as we see many bad things happening and hear many painful stories. It’s tempting to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and weighed down. The good news is that we have a solid rock to stand on. We have an unchanging source of truth that lifts us above what we see and gives us an eternal perspective.

What is true?

There is one Almighty King – the King of kings and Lord of Lords. His name is Jesus.
There is an enemy at work in this world – but he is just a pawn.
There is a vast difference between the King and a pawn.

Ephesians 1:11 says, “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.”

Even when what happens is bad, even when we and others experience pain – we have the comfort of knowing that somehow God is weaving every bit of it into His divine plan.

The enemy is not all-powerful. He is evil, yes, but ultimately he is just a pawn who is subject to our omnipotent, marvelous, gracious, sovereign King.

I hope that comforts your heart today, as it does mine. I hope it gives you courage to face the darkness with faith and strength. I hope it renews hope, peace, and joy in your spirit.

Our King is good.
He overcomes evil with good.
He works all things for our good.
And He is accomplishing His good plans and purposes on this earth and for eternity.

Hallelujah!

"I saw heaven standing open and there before was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True...His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns...On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords." –Revelation 19:11, 16

Reyes y Peones

–Apocalipsis 19:11, 12, 16

The Father's Heart (El Corazón del Padre)

"As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him" (Psalm 103:13).

A few weeks ago, I was having a particularly difficult day. I had my music on shuffle and a song started playing that took me back to my teenage years in Colombia. It was a song my Bible teacher - and adopted dad - Mr. V, loved. Whenever I hear it, I think of him.

As the song played, I thought, "What would Mr. V say to me right now?"

Tears came to my eyes, even as words of encouragement came to my mind. I told myself, "I think he would say, 'Joanna, God is faithful. Remember all He's done for you, how He's carried you through. He'll bring you through this too.'"

Even though it's been more than 25 years since I've seen Mr. V (he was martyred in Colombia), I still knew what he would say to me. I still remember his father-heart. He had so much love that he shared with people, especially the missionary kids he served so well. Mr. V was an amazing expression of God's Father-heart.

Some people I know are blessed with a wonderful dad! Others, like me, grew up without a father. And some have experienced the heartache of a really bad earthly father. Regardless, we all want an incredible father to fill that place in our lives. There's something about the role of a father....

The good news is that Almighty God, the Holy One, the Sovereign LORD - has chosen to be our heavenly Father! Does that amaze you like it does me?

God didn't have to adopt us as His children. He could have just provided salvation and a relationship with Him as our Lord, Master, and Savior. But I think the eternal reality is that God IS the original Father. And so consistent with who He is, He created humans to live in family relationships, including a father role. While human fathers are imperfect, our heavenly Father is greater than any dad we can imagine!

Jesus said that He came to reveal the Father. Think about how much love, compassion, and commitment that shows!

God wants us to know Him as our Father - in that personal, real, safe, affirming, secure, fun, completely loved way that goes beyond being His servant, to being His beloved child!

It astounds me.
Knowing that I have someone who wants me to know Him - even more than I want to know Him.
Knowing that He wants me to know how loved I am - even more than I want to be loved.
Knowing that He is even more committed to me - than I long for Him to be.

How is your relationship with your heavenly Father? Does He feel distant? Is it hard to see Him as loving you unconditionally? Does He make you laugh? Can you climb up in His lap (metaphorically speaking) and just be held by Him?

I know for me, getting to know God more and more as my Father - my Abba, daddy - has been one of the greatest blessings I've experienced in my life. I ask Jesus often to continue to reveal the Father to me. I want to go deeper in knowing my Father's heart and enjoying this indescribable relationship with the great "I AM" - who has chosen to be my Abba.

If it helps you, my friend and I have created a new video series called "From the Father's Heart" with brief but powerful messages about your heavenly Father and His heart for you. Below is the first video in our series. If you haven't seen it yet on our Facebook page or YouTube channel, I hope it'll bless and encourage you.

Let's keep drawing near to our Father - He's calling us, "Come near. Know me. Rest. Receive."

Me asombra.

Descansa. Recibe.”
