Glasses (Gafas)

Do you ever wonder how Christians across the world can read the same Bible yet have such a variety of ideas and beliefs?

I'm sure there is a complicated, multi-faceted answer to that question. However, I think one small piece of it may be the different "glasses" that we wear.

Each of us sees the world through certain lenses, such as optimistic, pessimistic, trusting, cynical, etc. We also see the Bible through certain lenses.

Many of us read the Bible through "man-centered" lenses. Humans are the starting point, then we kind of 'add' God into the picture. Or we read it for lists of what we're supposed to do or not do in life.

Sometimes we read the Bible through the lens of practicality (how will this help me right now?) or academic study (what does it say about history?).

Over the past few years, I've noticed God working to change my "glasses" little by little. It's been an interesting process, and definitely worthwhile.

A couple of years ago I heard Beth Moore talking about a particular passage in Exodus 34 that caught my attention.

"Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed His name, the LORD. And He passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness...."
-Exodus 34:5-6

I think it's significant that God repeated His name twice - "the LORD, the LORD". To me this signifies an emphasis on the fact that God is the only Almighty, Sovereign, "I AM"! He alone is the LORD - the Sovereign God of ALL. This statement immediately puts the world in its proper order - God is at the center and ruling over all. Everything begins with God, not man. Everything is for God, about God, from God, to God...not man (Rom. 11:36). Though this goes contrary to our prideful human nature, it is eternal reality.

Another thing that amazes me from this passage is that when God proclaimed Himself to Moses, of all the attributes He could have mentioned, the first two are "compassionate and gracious". He didn't start with holy, just, righteous, or eternal, even though He is all those things. His first words of self-description are ones of GRACE.

Perhaps this is because Grace is what we as humans need so desperately. And maybe it's because Grace is something we need to be reminded of constantly. There is never a moment when we don't need Grace. Human effort is our 'default' button, but it is never enough to reach or to please Almighty God. Thankfully, the LORD is a God of Grace!

For me, these two truths have become the "glasses" through which I read the Bible. I want to understand God's Word through the lenses of His Sovereignty and His Grace.

I realize that none of us has a perfect grasp of all truth, but I trust that my new "glasses" are leading me in the right direction.

What about you? What "glasses" do you use when reading God's Word?

Gafas

Hahahoho Hallelujah! (Hahahoho ¡Aleluya!)

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
-Proverbs 17:22

"Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
'The LORD has done great things for them.'
The LORD has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy."
-Psalm 126:2-3

"Nehemiah said, '...This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.'”
-Nehemiah 8:10

-Proverbios 17:22

"Nuestra boca se llenó de risas;

Miracles (Milagros)

I've never been someone who makes New Year's resolutions. But a few years ago I started choosing a theme for the new year.

One year my theme was "following." I felt like God wanted me to just focus on following Him - wherever He led me, regardless of the possible difficulties or consequences. That was a tough year. But having that mindset of following really helped.

Last year the theme was expectation. I had a sense of eager anticipation of what God had in store for me. However, many things that I expected and hoped would happen, didn't. And other things I had no idea or dream of happening, did. So last year was a little confusing for me, but I trust that God was still working out His divine plan for me.

This year I'm in a "wait and see" mode. I really have no idea what the new year holds and I'm hesitant to formulate any specific expectations. Yet the sense of eager anticipation still lingers in my spirit. Perhaps that's why I'm hoping and praying that this will be a year of many miracles!

It's not that I haven't experienced miracles before. I've seen God do miraculous things, especially during the last few years. Yet I long to see the Lord do many impossible things, many acts of divine intervention, many displays of His power.

Why? Because He is GOD!

I wonder...
Does God sometimes not do as many miracles because we simply aren't asking for or looking for them?
Do we rely on our own strength, our own technology, our own abilities...instead of believing that God wants to do things that only HE can do?
If we ask God to display His miraculous power more, will we begin to see it already operating in our lives?

I'm not sure about the answers to these questions, but I do think this is a good year to explore them.

Will you join me?

Will you pray for God to make this a year of many miracles? So that we as His children might increase our awe and praise of Him, and so that those who don't know Him might see His power displayed and seek Him?

I already have a list of at least five specific miracles I'm praying for. I imagine that list will continue to grow. And I'll be sure to let you know when those prayers are answered. =)

We have an awesome God! Let's continue to praise Him and to watch eagerly for the miraculous things He will do this year!

“Who among the gods is like you, O LORD?
   Who is like you—
      majestic in holiness,
      awesome in glory,
      working wonders?"
-Exodus 15:11

Milagros

Me pregunto. . .

¿Te unirás a mí?

A Prayer For The New Year (Una oración para Nuevo Año)

"Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples."
-Psalm 77:13-14

Salmo 77:13-14
