2016 has been a most unusual year.

I've faced incredible challenges. I've experienced deep heartache. I've fought the most intense spiritual battles of my whole life.

I've also seen God's miraculous provision time after time! I've rejoiced in many long-time desires fulfilled! I've felt God pouring out His goodness on me in so many ways!

At this moment, I really don't have words to express how grateful I am for the journey God has taken me on this year. He deserves SO much praise, honor and glory for the ways He has carried me, provided for me, strengthened me, delivered me, healed me, amazed me and drawn me closer to His heart through it all. Maybe sometime I'll write a book about 2016, the year of insurmountable challenges, crazy faith and impossible dreams coming true!

For now, as I celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, I think I'll just sit quietly for a while, and let Jesus read my heart. He alone knows the things in it that words can't express.

What about you? What are you grateful for today? Have you told the Lord, have you shared your heart with Him? He loves to hear you expressing your gratitude to Him. May you hear His quiet voice calling you near, and may you know how precious you are to Him today.

Agradecida más allá de las palabras

2016 ha sido un año muy inusual.

He enfrentado desafíos increíbles. He experimentado profunda angustia.

Crazy Hope

Picture this: A dark sky. A dusty hill. A small crowd of people, huddled, muttering, watching. Watching three men hanging on wooden crosses. Criminals being executed by ruthless Roman soldiers. It’s a gruesome sight.

Now pause, and listen. Listen to the conversation of the three dying men, no doubt spoken brokenly in between groans of agony and gasps for air.

Criminal 1 – “Hey you! Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

Criminal 2 – “Quiet. Don’t you fear God? You and I are punished justly. We’re getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus – “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
(from Luke 23)

I don’t know about you, but this strikes me as a very strange conversation for such a situation.

The first criminal was desperately grasping for some kind of reprieve, but there’s clearly no hope in his words, only anger and fear.

The second criminal at first appears to have clear thinking. He knew he had done wrong and that he deserved such an awful punishment. But then he turned to Jesus with an odd request. “Remember me….”

Remember? These men are about to breathe their last breaths. How can Jesus remember him once they’re both dead?

“Remember me when you come into your kingdom.” What kind of crazy talk is that? A dying man has no kingdom.

But Jesus’ response is even more strange. “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Today? The clock is running out. Today will be the last day. And hanging on a cross certainly isn’t paradise.

Can you imagine how insane this conversation must have sounded to the huddled crowd of onlookers? I can see them shaking their heads. Muttering how the loss of blood must have made the men delirious. Never before had they heard such a ridiculous conversation at an execution.

But was it ridiculous? Crazy maybe. But not ridiculous. Yes, it was crazy for the criminal to ask Jesus to remember him. It was crazy hope.

The kind of hope that sees past this earth and this life.
The kind of hope that knew death was not the end.
The kind of hope that believed that in spite of all his horrible sin, he could still ask Jesus for mercy.
The kind of hope that was convinced Jesus would not stay dead, that He would indeed inherit His kingdom and rule over all.
The kind of hope that reached out for impossible grace and love from an Almighty God.

That’s crazy all right.

Jesus’ reply was also crazy. He told the dying criminal that indeed death was not the end. After death there would be new life for both of them. And that in spite of the man’s sinful actions in his life, his one moment of faith and crazy hope would result in spending eternity with Jesus in paradise.

It doesn’t make sense, does it? Praise God that it doesn’t! Praise God that we can have this crazy hope – this knowledge that death is not the end! That Jesus came and died in our place, purposefully, so we could be forgiven of all our sin and spend eternity with Him. We, like the criminal on the cross, deserve punishment. But we, like him, have received magnificent mercy and grace.

I’m so thankful Luke recorded this conversation. I imagine that most of the onlookers scoffed and dismissed these words as the ravings of crazy, dying men. But instead these words have given life and crazy hope to generations of people who recognize the truth and power they hold!

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” –2 Corinthians 5:21

¡Nuevo libro pronto!

Buenas noticias – He estado ocupada trabajando en terminar mi próximo libro y ¡viene pronto!

¡Sálvate a ti mismo y a nosotros!”

Criminal 2 – “Silencio. ¿No temes a Dios?

-2 Co. 5:21
