What To Do In Troubled Times (¿Qué Hacer en Tiempos Difíciles?)

David wrote his psalms thousands of years ago, in a different world and a different time. Yet through the centuries some things remain the same.

As I read Psalm 37 recently, it seemed like a description of our world today - evil men prospering, the wicked oppressing the righteous, truth and justice being trampled....

What can we do? How do we live in such troubled times?

I think the answer for us is the same one David wrote centuries ago in Psalm 37:

1) Don't fret (vv. 1, 7, 8)

...or worry, or be anxious, angry, resentful, fearful...or any other negative response. All these attitudes and emotions do no good in effecting change, and they only drag us down.

Jesus told the people of His day not to worry (Matthew 6:25-34). Paul reiterated this instruction again to the church at Philipi (Philippians 4:6-7). By God's grace, we can reject the temptation to fret, worry, fear, etc.

2) Trust God (vv. 3, 5)

Our hope is not in this world or the people of this world. Our hope is in GOD. He is still in control over everything that happens. His promises are still true. His grace is still sufficient for us.

No matter what we see around us, we can trust in God - knowing WHO He is and what He has promised to do. In trusting Him there is peace and blessing (Psalm 84:12).

3) Do good (vv. 3, 27)

As is often said, "Don't curse the darkness; light a candle." We are still here on earth to participate with God in His mission of revealing Himself and overcoming evil with His goodness (Romans 12:21).

What good can God do through you today? Send a note, give a hug, stop and pray with someone...? Opportunities to do good are all around us. As we each do our part, God weaves together His beautiful plan for changed lives and His goodness displayed.

4) Delight in the LORD (v. 4)

With so much suffering and heartache around us, sometimes we think we ought to be continually mournful. How can we be happy when others are dying? But in every situation, what we need most of all is to delight in GOD!

Regardless of what is happening on earth, God inhabits eternity, and He is always worthy of our worship, love and delight (Isaiah 61:10)! And it's when we're continually delighted in Him that we can be truly effective for Him. If we lose our delight in the LORD, we are losing effectiveness in the spiritual battle that surrounds us (Nehemiah 8:10).

5) Wait for the LORD (vv. 7, 34)

God is Just. He will make all things right...just not usually according to our timetable. As we practice trusting Him, we learn to wait on Him and to rest in His perfect timing.

The Lord will guide us day by day. He will meet our needs. And He will give us joy in His presence, even in the waiting (1 Peter 1:3-8).

Don't fret.
Trust God.
Do good.
Delight in the Lord.
Wait on Him.

In troubled times, may we hold on to these timeless truths - truths that sustained David and that will sustain us today.

1) No te irrites (vrs. 1, 7, 8)

No te irrites.
